The
Saiyan a is a race of fighters from the planet Vegeta. They took
of the planet of Plant by the Tuffles and renamed it after there
king.
Legend
of the Super Saiyan
Since
there are two versions of DBZ I will stick with common one, the
anime. Vegeta states that only 1 in every 1,000 Saiyans is born
a Legendary Super Saiyan. However this is apparently wrong, because
after Goku achieves this, so does Vegeta, Gohan, Goten, Trunks,
and Broli.
The
original Super Saiyan was shown as a huge Golden Monkey in the series
as Vegeta talks about him. This form is thought to be attained either
by being born with the standards of a Legendary Super Saiyan or
absorbing huges amounts of Brute Waves from a planet. A Super Saiyan
is like the transformations of Frieza. The body of a normal Saiyan
can only hold so much power, which is why the physical changes occur
while reaching the different levels of Super Saiyan.
The
pure heart is not hard to achieve for it can be either good or evil.
However the rage must be found from within as was the case with
Vegeta who found that it was his weakness that was his drive not
his hatred of Goku.

of a Super Saiyan

side note on the requirements. Some believe that no tail is required
to become a Super Saiyan (Gold hair, green eyes). However since
I am going by the anime, in GT, Goku becomes a golden haired, green
eyed Super Saiyan with a tail, so the "No tail" requirement
doesn't count.
Downfalls
of a Super Saiyan
There
are not many except the fact that one who becomes a Super Saiyan
loses energy faster than when he is in his normal state. Also hate
must always be at the forefront of the person's mind so even Goku
becomes slightly overwhelmed when he becomes a Super Saiyan.
No
Women Super Saiyans
Well
up until this point only one Saiyan (or at least part Saiyan) woman
has been shown, Pan. Pan is the daughter of Gohan and Videl, and
is a main character in GT. However she never experiences extreme
rage as the males do and therefore doesn't become a Super Saiyan.
Other than that she could have perfectly become a Super Saiyan.
